Need help with my mountain bike brakes!?
Just got a new mountain bike with disc brakes, first time i’ve ever had disc brakes so im not familiar with them. it seems that they are loose so when i pull the brake lever nothing happens, but when i tighten the brakes, the discs rub against the calipers when im not pulling the lever and it slows me down. If anyone can help with this it would be very appreciated.
Yea i was definitely in your situation when i got my first bike with discs earlier this year. You’ll get used to them by experimenting and playing around with them.
To fix your problem, here’s what i do:
-first make sure the wheel is properly mounted and mounted as straight as possible.
-Then loosen the bolts that attach the calliper to the mounting bracket, NOT the bolts that attach the bracket to the fork.
-Squeeze the lever and hold it, then tighten the bolts, this will get the calliper generally straight and will provide you with a good base for adjusting. (You can release the lever after you tighten)
Look at the pads, how far are they from the rotor? You basically want to get them as close as possible without having them rub right? This is how…
The outside pad is the pad that is operated by the cable. Loosening the cable tension will move the pad away from the rotor, tightening will move the pad closer. What I do for the inside pad is loosen the bolt on the calliper arm that clamps the cable to the calliper arm, set the barrel adjuster half way, and move the cable and the caliper arm so that the pad almost touches. Since the barrel adjuster is halfway screwed, you can either loosen or tighten plenty.
The inside pad is stationary and has its own adjuster on the inside side of the caliper. You can move the inside pad either in or out by turning the adjuster with either an allen wrench or some calipers let you adjust it with your fingers. Basically turn it clockwise to tighten and move the pad it, vise versa to move it out.
You’ll get the hang of it, don’t worry!
